Documentary Series featuring 30 transgenders’ stories to advocate the discussion of the bill to enforce the law enshrining rights for transgender people (passed in 2015)

Videos got 2,000 organic views on Youtube, 300 likes and 30 shares on Facebook after 1 week.

Context:

On November 24, 2015, Vietnam passed a landmark law by a vote of 282–84, enshrining rights for transgender people in a move, advocacy groups say, paves the way for sex reassignment surgery. Such operations were previously illegal, forcing people to travel to nearby Thailand for the surgery. The legislation allows those who have undergone sex reassignment to register under their preferred sex.

The law went into effect in January 2017. However, for that law to be fully enforced, a further bill needs to be passed. This bill covers the requirements for gender change applicants and the requirements for those performing it.

In November 2018, speaking at a transgender rights event, the Việt Nam Union of Science and Technology Associations and Nguyễn Huy Quang, head of the Department of Legislation at the Ministry of Health, announced that the National Assembly is expected to discuss the bill in 2020. However, it has been delayed since other ‘more important’ health plans need to be prioritized to discuss.

To push the process forward, we encouraged genuine voices from the transgender community.

Objectives:

A call to transgender people that it’s time to raise your voice to fight for the rights you deserve.

Target population:

Primary: Transgender people
Secondary: Transgender people allies

Activities:

As an organization that has been practicing the community-based approach, iSEE Institute believes in the power of insiders’ voices. Their stories would be the “sharp weapon” to fight for the rights.

We set up a safe space to invite transgender people to  tell their life stories through three particular periods of their lives, namely finding their true-selves, facing challenges and acceptance, and desiring.

We edited into four videos, including the main video, which was expected to be presented on the bill iscussion day among policymakers and NGOs/CSOs represenatives, and a series of 3 videos: Finding myself – Challenge and Acceptance – Desire.

Main video:

Series of 3 parts

Challenge and Acceptance
